Call Boxes
Motorist aid call boxes have been on the sides of roads since the mid 60s. These systems were all wireline-based systems that were provided by the local telephone companies.
Los Angeles County, a pioneer in transportation technologies, had one of the most extensive wireline call box systems in the country. By the early 80s these systems began to show their wear. Their usefulness had long been acknowledged and a new technology was required to replace these aging systems.
